History

In 1879 Alexander Forrest explored this new area and named the Kimberley district, the Ord & Margaret Rivers as well as the King Leopold Ranges. Subsequently becoming a land agent he became the leading figure in the leasing of over 51 million acres across the region during 1883. He then later was to become the first member of the WA Legislative Council for The Kimberley region.

He later sought the advice of the famous Durack family and established the Argyle, Lissadell, Rosewood & Ivanhoe cattle stations which progressed into agriculture development which eventually led to the Ord River Irrigation scheme being planned in the 1950's where a townsite was included in the proposed development plan

In 1958 the construction of the irrigation scheme was under way and by 1963 the first stage had been completed. It was during this time that Kununurra was established as the main construction town associated with the irrigation scheme.
